Will I get a "proper" eye test?

Yes. I have invested in the latest specialist portable equipment to ensure a thorough eye examination. I have been a member of the General Optical Council and the College of Optometrist for over 25 years.

How much will it cost?

Eye tests are free in Scotland and there is no charge for the optometrist to come to your house.

Glasses vary in price. If you receive certain benefits, such as Pension Credit guarantee, then we havea range of frames to choose from completely free. If you don’t get help with the cost of your glasses, then we will make the prices as clear as possible. You are under no obligation to buy your glasses from us and we are happy to come back at another time if you want to have a think about it first.

I'm a family member/carer - Can I be there for the eye test?

Yes. In fact, I encourage my patients to have someone else present. And you can arrange an evening or weekend appointment to make this more suitable.

How often should I have an eye test?

Everyone should have an eye examination every 2 years. If you’re over 70 you should have an eye examination every year. However, if you notice any changes to your vision, don’t wait. Make an appointment to get your eyes checked right away.

How do I prepare for my eye test?

There’s not much to do before a home visit. Look out your old glasses and keep a list of your medication handy. Ideally, the eye test would take place in a room with good curtains or blinds. Also, if you can sit on a dining room chair then that’s best. But don’t worry if you can’t – I can perform an eye examination even if you’re confined to bed.

What about people living with dementia?

Many behaviours, such as becoming withdrawn, being clumsy, being startled or disorientated may actually be due to sight loss rather than dementia. It is vital to rule out visual problems before blaming the dementia. I can tailor the eye exam and use specialist equipment if communication is difficult.

How do I arrange a visit?

You can fill in the request an appointment form, and let me know how best to get in touch with you to arrange. Or give me a ring on 0141 611 9696 and leave a message, with your phone number, and I’ll call you back as soon as I can.
